121 Million People Affected by Depression

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a Doctor, Lawyer, Professional Athlete, Public Figure, Stay-at-Home Mom, Student, Child, or a CEO – you may be one of the 121 million people in world affected by depression.  Chances are someone you know is.

Thank you to Suicide Shatters and Canadian Mental Health Organization for sharing the video below, highlighting brave celebrities such as Uma Thurman, Ben Stiller, Jim Carey, Brooke Shields and many others whose quotes show – you are not alone.

The statistics provided by the World Health Organization, shown in the video below are eye opening:

  • The percentage of the population who sees depression as a personal weakness – 54% – this is one of the reasons why the stigma remains so huge.  It is not a personal weakness!
  • Worldwide, depression remains the leading cause of disability.
  • It’s predicted that by 2020, depression will be the 2nd largest killer following heart disease.

Michael Landsberg of Off The Record is bravely and passionately sharing his advocacy for Mental Illness Awareness…

“I Suffer From Depression!  People don’t say those words because they’re embarrassed.   Because people are embarrassed they don’t get help.”
~ Michael Landsberg ~

Jenny, otherwise known as The Bloggess shares her personal experience with depression.

I could list so many more videos of people sharing their story, speaking their truth without shame.  There is nothing to be ashamed of. Depression does not define you. Depression IS a treatable illness.

Please don’t suffer in silence any more.

And if you have a loved one with depression – please – educate yourself, ask how you can help them.  Support them with unconditional love and acceptance.

Together we can keep the conversation going and reduce the stigma around mental illness!
