Courage doesn’t always roar

Quite often courage  is related to some major act of bravery.  I find the quiet displays of courage some of the most profound and incredible acts of bravery there is.

Reaching out and asking for help!

Now that is a quiet display of bravery.

I am reminded on a daily basis, how so many people are paralyzed by fear to reach out and ask for help while in the midst of depression and anxiety.

Why?

They fear being judged, being ridiculed or discarded.  And quite often this has been proven to them.

“I am feeling down and depressed.” says Joe to his friend Jane.

“You’ve got nothing to be depressed about, snap out of it.” says Jane.

What this has done, is completely diminished and discarded what could potentially have been a life saving conversation.  Now let’s look at a kind, loving and compassionate response.

“I am feeling down and depressed.” says Joe to his friend Jane.

“What is going on?  How can I help you?” says Jane.

Joe has displayed a quiet courage of vulnerability and a cry for love.  And Jane, has opened up a line of caring support and acceptance.

If you are experiencing depression and have had someone come back at you with a statement such as “You’ve got nothing to be depressed about.” please don’t take this personally.  When a person responds like this, it is more than likely their own fear, and lack of understanding.  Instead of withdrawing further you can reply with: “Actually, these feelings are very real and I could use your support and love right now, if you are unable to that’s okay.” and then try another friend.  This is Standing UP for yourself, asking for what you want and your need for help.

If someone ever comes to you saying they feel depressed – PLEASE do NOT avoid or discard.  It could be the difference between life and death. For further tips you can read Providing Support a loved one through mental illness.

Courage doesn’t always roar – and it takes a lot of courage to quietly ask for help.

Hugs & Love
