How do YOU use Social Media???

As we drove through beautiful Highway 93, (which always creates a space of clarity and reflection for me) the discussion came to my use of Facebook & Twitter, the evolution and sustainability of SimpLee Serene and what’s next…  I love the discussions my husband and I have; they are always honest, insightful and thought-provoking.  Understanding and acceptance was achieved on both sides.

When we arrived, Neil gave me the gift of silence by taking the girls to the hot springs.  Set up all nice and comfy on the couch, plush blanket over my legs, I began to read…  A magazine, book, newspaper you may ask?  NO!  Facebook.  I hear a sigh, or envision the shake of a head from some people as I write the word “Facebook”, which brings a cheeky little smile to my face.

There is so much incredible information on Facebook, there are many pages and groups to visit, links to check out, music videos to enjoy.  One particular page as of late that has sparked my interest and interaction is Awesome Women Hub, which is where the majority of time has been spent this evening – it is filled with incredible blog posts, fun articles, real stories and words of inspiration.  A great article by LaBelette Rouge that I came across, gave me insight on the importance of the name of a book – which is extremely helpful given mine is about ready.

Every now and then I pop back to my own feed and see what people are up to, make a comment or two, a post here and there, a fun chat with a friend and then back to reading.

So how should you use Social Media?

You will answer this question completely different to the next person: it may be a way of staying connected with friends, searching out long lost friends and relatives or for building relationships in business.  There is no right or wrong, just different.  Be clear on your intention, and as I have learned – be very careful and considerate when mixing business & pleasure.

Over the past year my use of social media has definitely evolved: 3 months ago I was not using twitter, 4 months ago my personal facebook page was just that – personal, and I have been blogging since May 2007.

What can you do for privacy?

Although not easy to find, there are excellent privacy settings that you can customize and set on your page.  It takes time and dedication to ensure you are respecting your own privacy as well as the privacy of your friends.

A simple tip:

  • go to Account (top right corner)
  • select Privacy Settings
  • You will see “Basic Directory Information”  Click on “view settings”

You can see how your page is viewed, facebook suggests “We suggest leaving the other basic settings below open to everyone to make it easier for real world friends to find and connect with you”    I do not agree with this, to protect the privacy of my friends one of the settings I have , is that “only me” can see my friends list.

I have gone to great lengths to protect the privacy of my closest friends, as my personal facebook page has become a mixture of both business & pleasure.  Have you?

Have a wonderful long weekend everyone.

Hugs
