Yesterday I was introduced through Twitter by Gail of Inspire Me Today about the Fast Companys’ The Influence Project…
Gail has inspired me on many levels with great quotes, searching “need a hug” on Twitter and seeing 90% of the users needing a hug being teenagers, so without any thought I clicked to vote for her.
So I started checking out some of the people already on 2010′s Most Influential Person Online – You are more influential than you think. A huge variety of human beings… So I got to thinking, this is another opportunity to get my story out there, why not – so I registered and shared with my Facebook & Twitter friends. I went on Fast Companys’ facebook fan page and have been intrigued by all the comments, varying from support to disgust… Which led me to some reflection – is this really about ego???
The other thing that came up for me was the discomfort around the word “influence”. So being the curious soul that I am I started digging a little further… What really is the meaning of “influence”? I personally am much more comfortable with the word “inspire”
So what are the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary meanings of each?:

Main Entry: in·spire 1 a : to influence, move, or guide by divine or supernatural inspiration b : to exert an animating, enlivening, or exalting influence on
Influence: to affect the actions of humans to reach out and ask for help when in crisis, to reduce stigma and build awareness around mental illness & suicide
Inspire: to influence, move, or guide by divine or supernatural inspirationto reach reach out and ask for help when in crisis, to reduce stigma and build awareness around mental illness & suicide……
So the statement “you are more influential than you think” sits better with me now… So is it all about ego????? Well that’s for each individual to decide, and it’s not my place to judge… how about you???
